What is the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International?
Founded in 1929 in Austin, Texas, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (DKG) is a professional honor society for key women educators. With approximately 50,000 members in 17 countries, DKG offers members many opportunities such as
• professional development
• leadership training
• scholarships and grants
• networking with educators around the world
• fellowship and learning through a local chapter
• forums for presenting and publishing
• professional conferences and conventions
Membership in DKG provides on a continuous basis a wealth of educational and leadership opportunities through chapter meetings and events, area workshops, regional conferences, state conventions, and international conventions. Through these avenues, members have multiple opportunities to network with and share expertise or receive guidance from other educators, including experienced teachers, principals and other school personnel, retired educators, and even new teachers. Numerous philanthropic events are held each year at the international level and chapter level to help students and their families in need. Members enjoy fellowship, camaraderie, and professional affiliation.
DKG membership is an honor and is offered by invitation from a local chapter. Key women educators who are open to change, who want to be empowered to reach their personal and professional goals, who draw inspiration from others, and who expand their style and talents by embracing diversity, are invited to join DKG. Members belong to a chapter, a state organization, and the international society.
A candidate for membership must be
• employed as a professional educator at the time of her election; or
• retired from an educational position.

Society Founders
Founded May 11, 1929
Twelve women met in 1929 on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin with noble aspirations to build an organization to promote women in education and bring recognition and respect to their profession. The result of their planning was the founding of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. These Founders created a list of five Purposes which were intended to guide the organization. This number later grew to seven. These Purposes are as relevant today as they were in 1929.
