Schools for Africa - International Project

Delegates to the 2010 DKG International Convention in Spokane, Washington, agreed to "transform lives through education" on the African continent when they unanimously voted to undertake the Schools for Africa project as the first official international project of the Society. Through DKG's support of this project, more than 5 million African children have gained access to quality basic education. The project has a special focus on girls, orphans, and vulnerable children. DKG's partnership with UNICEF and the Nelson Mandela Foundation has trained over 115,000 teachers and built or rehabilitated 1,100 schools. For details about this project, go to www.dkg.org .

Epsilon Kappa supports the Schools for Africa project by donating funds collected through the brag basket at designated chapter meetings. Typically at t
he December holiday chapter meeting, more information is provided about the Schools for Africa initiative and how DKG specifically assists those children.

S.E.E. - Support for Early-Career Educators

In order to share the vision, Leading Women Educators Impacting Education Worldwide, and strengthen our Society, the International Educational Excellence Committee established Supporting Early-career Educators (SEE) as its second international project during the 2012 International Convention in New York City.
For more information about the international project, go to www.dkg.org to the Educational Excellence Committee page.

SEE encourages members/chapters to be creative in support of early-career educators with a variety of strategies, such as:
• giving support for phone calls and visits,
• helping with lesson plans and bulletin board ideas,
• offering advice on classroom management and parent-teacher relations, and
• providing support in appropriate and practical ways.

Congratulations to the SEE Committee

Epsilon Kappa’s S.E.E. project was awarded $6,000 from the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation on March 21, 2016. Through the collaboration of mentors and mentees, the committee determined that not only did new educators need STEM books, but also, the technological devices (iPads) that could expand those literary experiences. This grant will fund the purchase of STEM books for first year teachers and allow returning mentees to receive iPads. We are extremely grateful to all our members for their support of this important endeavor. Look for updates as we build upon the success of S.E.E. with this generous award.

Epsilon Kappa Chapter supports this project locally through its own SEE project by continuing to mentor early career educators in four elementary schools.

• Currently established in eight North Austin elementary schools
• Provides professional and financial support for teachers in their first five years of service
• Project is enthusiastically received by teachers and administrators in participating schools
• Project has been featured in a KXAN report on factors affecting teacher retention (aired June 21, 2013)
• Every project participant is paired with an experienced educator who serves as a mentor throughout the school year
• In initial stages of project, each new teacher is given a ream of copy paper, a flash drive, and an electric pencil sharpener
• Teachers receive professional books, such as The First Days of School by Harry and Rosemary Wong, with follow-up discussions scheduled with mentors
• Focus for 2014-2015 is purchase of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) classroom libraries for each grade level in participating schools
• Additional funding is provided for classroom supplies/equipment or for professional development activities

ASTEF awarded $1,500 to continue our chapter SEE project in 2014-2015. Funds were used to help 15 early-career educators build a STEM library for their classrooms. The SEE committee selected grade level appropriate books to highlight science, math, engineering, and technology concepts through non-fiction or even fiction titles. Each mentor  presented the mentee with around $100 worth of books early in the school year.
